In my last blog in February I was eagerly waiting for the Book Fair to arrive. It arrived and we got it set up and looking very inviting. Our students got to come for Looking day then we had a crazy couple of weeks weather wise! We ended up only have the book fair open for three half days. Obviously we did not do as well as a full week of selling but we did earn Scholastic Dollars and also some cash. My library assistants helped picked some books from the fair to add to our stock and our 3rd Grade boys book club "Bookformers" also chose some books that they would like to have in their collection to read.
We started our boys "Bookformers" four years ago. The Curriculum Coach at the time, Carie Hayworth, and I saw a need for a boys only book club where we hoped we would be able to persuade 3rd grade boys, who could read but chose not to, that reading was fun. Carie earned us a Bright Beginnings grant which we bought books and magazines with. These books were kept just for the boys to read. The following year I earned a Target grant and the boys helped me choose all the books that were purchased with the grant. I used Scholastic Dollars to buy books for them as they moved in to 5th grade. We met weekly and chatted about the materials they were reading, we used technology to keep their interest they particularly enjoyed blogging with each other and creating videos about what they had read. At the end of 5th grade all those boys had changed their opinions on reading and one of them even earned the reading award in his class. I have just started with a new group of 3rd grade boys and look forward to showing them that reading is fun.

Tomorrow ,weather permitting the big red Scholastic truck will arrive at school to deliver our book fair. It is always exciting to set up the book fair and see what new titles have been included. As I look through the books I find myself thinking about which students are going to go crazy when they see particular new books. Last book fair the Minecraft books were a HUGE hit. Book fairs are a great way to encourage students to read.
